Privacy Policy

This is a draft and has not been reviewed by a lawyer. It was written against what the software actually does, and it is accurate to that, but accuracy about the code is not the same as legal sufficiency. Have a solicitor read it before Lectavi is sold to anybody.

Lectavi records lectures, so it handles recordings of people speaking. This says exactly where that audio goes, what is kept, and what leaves your machine.

The short version

• The recording file stays on your computer. The WAV of a lecture is never uploaded. It sits in Lectavi's folder on your disk and is deleted when you delete the lecture.
• The audio is streamed to a transcription service while you record. That is how the words are produced. It is not the same as uploading the file, and it is not nothing either, so it is stated plainly here rather than glossed.
• The full transcript stays on your computer. Transcript segments are never synced.
• Your notes, cards and review history sync when you are signed in, so you can revise on another device.

What Lectavi stores on your computer

Everything below lives in Lectavi's application data folder, on your disk, under your user account. None of it is encrypted at rest beyond whatever your operating system does.

• The audio recording of each lecture, as a WAV file.
• The transcript, including per word timings.
• The notes, claims, flashcards and review history.
• Your classes, syllabus text and any course materials you import.
• Access tokens for services you connect, in a file readable only by your user account.

What leaves your computer, and when

While you are recording

Audio is streamed to Deepgram to be turned into text. This happens continuously while a recording is running. Without it there is no transcript, so it is not optional while transcription is on.

After a lecture

The transcript text is sent to OpenRouter, which routes it to a language model, to produce the notes, the claims, the flashcards and the visuals. Audio is not sent at this stage, only text.

If you sign in

Your sessions, notes, claims, flashcards and review history are synced to Supabase so they are available on another device. Audio and transcript segments are never synced, which is a deliberate design decision rather than a policy one: a fifty minute recording is around a hundred megabytes, and transcripts are the largest table in the database.

If you subscribe

Payment is handled by Stripe. Lectavi never sees or stores your card details.

Recording other people

A lecture recording contains your lecturer's voice, and often other students' voices. You are responsible for having permission to record. Many places require the consent of everyone recorded, and most universities separately require the instructor's permission regardless of the law. Lectavi asks you to confirm you have permission, and cannot verify it. See the Terms of Service.

Children

Lectavi is not intended for anybody under 13, and you must be at least 16 in parts of the European Economic Area where that is the minimum age for consenting to data processing.

Getting your data, and deleting it

• Export. Lectavi can write your lectures, notes and cards out as files from Settings, at any time, without asking anybody.
• Local deletion. Deleting a lecture in the app removes its audio, transcript, notes and cards from your disk.
• Synced copies. Deleting a lecture locally does not by itself delete a copy already synced. To have synced data removed, write to the address below.
